ABOUT

Stokes United

A History & Legacy of Serving Stokes County

Stokes United began its journey in 1958 when a dedicated group of Stokes County’s finest came together to create the United Fund of Stokes County to ensure that everyone who calls Stokes County home had an opportunity to enjoy a better quality of life. By 1963, nine agencies were given grants totaling $18,302.29 (worth $180,000 today). By 1968, 23 agencies were receiving funds, and the donations continued to grow in the following decades.

The board decided on the name change to Stokes United in 2023, to coincide with the organization’s 65th anniversary and raise new interest in the agency’s work on behalf of Stokes County residents.

Today, Stokes United remains an autonomous, thriving, volunteer-led organization. We work year-round to raise money to fund grants for member agencies to ensure that people throughout the area have access to the services they need to thrive.

Our member agencies’ services include assisting victims of emergency/disasters, adults with special needs, domestic violence victims, individuals and families experiencing homelessness, those facing food insecurity, people in need of health support services, seniors in need of care and support services, as well as offering youth life-skill and empowerment programming.

87 cents of every dollar donated to Stokes United goes directly to serve the people of Stokes County.

The balance is used to help run the organization and raise awareness in the communities we serve.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors

In 1958, we were founded as the United Fund of Stokes County to raise money to help others in our community.

In 2024, now as Stokes United, our vision remains focused on helping our Stokes County neighbors. It takes the whole community being united together sharing responsibility and accountability to create real and lasting change in lives of our neighbors and making Stokes County a thriving community we can all be proud to call home.
